On behalf of Washburn University, we would like to express our sympathy to all those who lost loved ones in this event. We appreciate the support from the community and the university during this time of crisis. Please understand that this crisis is still under investigation. Cause of crash determined
The pilot who was injured is in stable condition and has given an explanation of the cause of the crash to the military. After further investigation of the wreckage, it has been confirmed that the cause of the crash was completely mechanical.
The wing elevators that control the up and down motion of the plane failed to respond. The pilot was able to contact Forbes Field of a malfunction, but was unable to control the plane to a safe landing. Forbes field is located 7.5 miles away from the Washburn campus.
Because there were several hundred injuries caused from the crash, Washburn University will be holding a blood drive next week to help the local blood banks and hospitals. All blood types are needed and everyone who is able is encouraged to donate blood. The blood drive will take place this coming Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union.

Wreckage cleared, families notified

Topeka officials have announced that all of the wreckage from the streets has been cleared. The intersection of 21st and Washburn is now open to through traffic as well as all of the other intersections. The soccer field and the Petro parking lot have not been completely cleared, but crews are working quickly to return the campus to normal. All classes previously held in Petro Allied Health have been relocated to other classrooms across campus. The electricity has been restored around Topeka.
A memorial fund has been established to assist families that were effected by the accident. Part of this fund will also help in the building of the permanent memorial to honor those that were lost in the accident. Donations to this fund can be sent to Washburn University, care of Petro Memorial Fund. The school is still taking donations for the rebuilding of Petro.
Animal control was able to safely catch all of the rats and opossums that escaped on campus. Luckily, nobody was injured by these animals. Animal control released the rats and opossums outside of Topeka city limits.
Everyone in attendance at the field hockey game have been accounted for. Those that were not injured reported to University Relations. All families have been notified of those that died or were injured in the crash. Survivors, family and friends plan a candlelight vigil and memorial service in honor of the 257 casualties of the Petro Crash.
The outdoor candlelight vigil will be held this evening at 8 p.m. surrounding the bell tower in the center of Washburn’s campus. The university’s president, Dr. Jerry Farley, will give a brief speech that will be followed by a moment of silence.
After all casualties’ family members are notified, a memorial service will be held. The service will be held in Washburn’s White Concert Hall. Friends, family and the surrounding community are welcome to attend and further information will be available at a later date.
Donations are being accepted at this time towards building a permanent memorial near the crash site. Donations are also being accepted for the rebuilding of Petro and Lee Arena. Petro Plane Crash: Community Update

As rescue workers have continued to clear the plane wreckage around the intersection of 21st and Washburn, 17th Street has now been opened for through traffic, as well as Macvicar. 21st street will continue to be blocked off until all wreckage is cleared.
It has also been reported that the boiling order has been lifted. Topeka residents may freely drink faucet water.
Crews have also been working to restore power to all homes that lost electricity. It is estimated that nearly 1,000 homes were without power after the plane crashed. Power should be restored in the next 24 hours.
We have receieved little word on the extent of the damage, but we can estimate that there was well over $20 million dollars in damage. Petro Allied Health Center was an $8.5 million dollar building, and it is reported that over 250 cars have been destroyed. Also, the women's soccer field was detroyed, as well as the rest of the southeast corner of Washburn's campus.

Petro Crash Updates

We have received word that the fires have all been put out. Rescue crews are still working to clear away the wreckage. At this point, there are 257 casualties. Another 431 people have been taken to area hospitials with injuries, many life threatening. Crews and Washburn officials are working to identify the casualties and notify families. This information is to the best of our knowledge and will be updated as soon as we know anything else.

Petro Plane Crash: Community Information

Topeka residents should not drink water from faucets due to the fuel spillage in the storm sewers. All water should be boiled before used for drinking or cooking.
Witnesses on the Westgate bridge reported seeing parts falling off the tail of the plane into the river as the plane flew over. No injuries outside of the campus area and surrounding intersections have been reported. The public has been asked to not touch any of the fallen parts. If debris from the plane has landed in, on, or around your home, please report this to the police.
Houses within a two-block radius have been evacuated. Residents have been relocated to the YMCA and the YWCA. Residents that have not been evacuated should use their own discretion if evacuation is necessary. The Red Cross has been called in to help assist with those affected by the accident.
The following streets have been closed:
* Washburn Avenue between 15th street and 25st street
* Macvicar Street between 15th and Shunga Trail
* 21st street between Lincoln and Randolph
* 17th street between Lincoln and Randolph

Emergency personnel have reported 100 fatalites and 200 injuries. Two firefighters have been taken to the Stormont Vail Hospital with smoke inhalation. Names have not yet been released, but families will be notified as soon as more information is known.
Fuel from the crash is pouring into storm sewers, causing rats and oppossums to escape across campus. Animal control has been notified and will tend to the problem as soon as the fire is under control and it is safe to enter campus. At the time of the accident, Lee Arena was at full occupancy at close to 4,200 people. Those who were uninjured were relocated to the Memorial Union.
Fires started from fuel stored in both wings of the plane. The Forbes Fire Department is on the scene. All Topeka Fire departments and ambulance departments within a 50 mile radius have been requested to help.
All injuries and fatalities have not yet been reported. The university will be closed for two days while the scene is secured. Classes held in Petro Allied Health will be cancelled until further notice.

The main fuselage and the other wing of the plane smashed into the parking lot east of Petro Allied Health. The nose of the plane skidded across the itersection at 21st street and Washburn Avenue. The pilot is severly injured, but alive. He has been airlifted by Life-Star to Kansas City. All other injuries are still unknown.

Plane Crashes into Lee Arena

Topeka, KS-A KC 135 plane crashed into Petro Allied Health at Washburn University this evening around 7 p.m. An indoor field hockey game was being played in Lee Arena in front of a nearly full house when one of the plane's wings crashed into the arena. The plane was returning from a refueling trip headed toward Forbes Field when it went down without warning.
The crash was first reported to the authorities by members of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, whose house is adjacent to the arena. At this time, the extent of the damages, injuries, and other details are not available.
Washburn is a municipally owned, Division II University with an enrollment of 7,153 students and 1,045 faculty and staff. Washburn is located in the center of Topeka, Kan.
